Are the crises that our societies suffer truly multiple crises, or are they merely different symptoms of a single underlying ailment?In some societies, we may find manifestations of moral decay - forms unfamiliar to traditionally Eastern and conservative communities. You may see teenage girls swooning passionately over their love for a Korean or Japanese singer. You may encounter political crises stemming from the imitation of Western models, which can be strange, foreign, and unsuitable for our countries. You may find an Arab who interacts with a foreign language more intensely than with his own, even perceiving the use of that language as the very essence of civilisation and refinement. You may come across a Muslim who detaches himself from his religion and seeks a Buddhist or Hindu faith or even disbelieves in all religions, not due to doubt or lack of conviction, but merely under the influence of a fad or trend.All of these are different manifestations of a single crisis.The Identity CrisisUnderstanding the causes, consequences, and solutions to identity crises must be considered a top priority by anyone committed to steering society onto a better path. Equally, it should be a personal priority for every individual within that society. Why is this so important? Because at any moment, a person could find themselves a victim of this crisis, grappling with one of its many symptoms.But what is identity? Why does it matter? What are its key components? What role does belief play in shaping and safeguarding a sound identity? How can identity be preserved? These are the questions explored in the following pages.This book was written several years ago, during a period when brevity was essential. Yet the positive response it received, particularly from university students, and the thoughtful questions they asked, along with others that surfaced in my own mind over time, motivated me to add substantial supplements.As my research deepened, I became increasingly aware that the issue was far more complex than I had initially thought. The additions eventually matched the length of the original work, and the book itself transformed, almost warranting a new name—perhaps: Youth and the Identity Crisis 2.0, in the way software creators name new editions when their releases evolve.There remain many dimensions that could not be addressed in these pages, either due to limited knowledge or a conscious choice to avoid engaging with even more profound and complicated aspects, leaving that work to encyclopedias and specialists.I pray to Allah that there will be no need to release a version 3.0 of this book in the future—not because the questions of identity and its relevance have been entirely resolved, but because I hope that our nation, and especially our youth, will soon be free from crises of identity and the dangerous consequences they bring.And indeed, that is not difficult for Allah.Mohsen Muhammad Taqi Al-Modarresi 20 Jumada al-Akhirah 1444 AH Read more
